How Climate Change is Affecting Water Access in Europe

As Europe faces growing challenges linked to droughts, floods, and water scarcity, Union de Citoyens Actifs (UCA) invited local and international young people to join a one-day educational and creative workshop titled “How Climate Change is Affecting Water Access in Europe.”

The goal was to help participants understand how climate change impacts Europe’s water systems, and more importantly, how young people can take action in their daily lives and communities.

This workshop combined learning, group discussion, and creativity, encouraging participants to connect global issues with local realities.

The main objectives of the workshop were:

  • To raise awareness about the effects of climate change on water access and quality in Europe.

  • To encourage critical thinking about how individual and collective actions impact water systems.

  • To foster creativity and teamwork through group reflection and artistic expression.

  • To promote youth participation in sustainable water management and climate action.

Workshop Schedule

Time Activity Description
10:00 – 10:30 Welcome & Icebreaker Participants introduced themselves by sharing one word that reminds them of water (e.g. life, calm, flow, strength).
10:30 – 11:15 Interactive Presentation Facilitator led a short talk on “Europe’s Changing Water Map,” showing data on droughts, floods, and melting glaciers using maps and photos.
11:15 – 12:00 Group Discussion Participants discussed local water issues they’ve observed, from leaking taps to polluted rivers, and shared personal stories.
12:00 – 13:00 Lunch Break Informal networking and sharing of eco-friendly lifestyle tips.
13:00 – 14:30 Creative Group Work Participants worked in 4 teams to create posters, short poems, or infographics explaining how climate change affects water in their region.
14:30 – 15:30 Gallery Walk & Presentation Teams presented their creations. Participants walked around, asked questions, and voted for the most inspiring message.
15:30 – 16:00 Reflection Circle & Closing Group reflection on what they learned and how they can take action. Each participant wrote one personal commitment on a blue “water drop” paper and placed it on a shared wall.

The session began with energy and curiosity. Most participants had heard about water shortages but didn’t realize how close the issue was to Europe.

During the presentation, they were surprised by photos showing dry rivers in Spain, floods in Germany, and melting glaciers in the Alps.

In group discussions, many shared personal experiences, families saving rainwater in summer, dry gardens, or flooded roads after heavy rain. These small stories showed how climate change is already part of everyday life.

  • Participation: High engagement throughout the day. 22 participants (60% female, 40% male), including several first-time attendees at UCA events.

  • Learning impact: Participants showed a better understanding of the connection between lifestyle habits, climate change, and water scarcity.

  • Collaboration: The creative group work encouraged teamwork between participants from different backgrounds and countries.

  • Language inclusivity: The workshop was bilingual (French and English), which allowed international youth to participate comfortably.

  • Environment: The event followed an eco-friendly policy — reusable cups, vegetarian lunch, and printed materials on recycled paper.

Results and Outcomes

Area Result
Knowledge 90% of participants reported learning new information about water scarcity in Europe.
Creativity 4 creative group outputs (2 posters, 1 infographic, 1 poem).
Engagement Participants expressed strong interest in continuing similar workshops.
Commitment Each participant wrote one personal action, such as “taking shorter showers,” “reducing food waste,” or “talking about water issues in my school.”

Challenges:

  • Limited time for deeper discussion on technical water management solutions.

  • Some participants requested more visual materials and real-life examples.

Recommendations:

  • Organize a follow-up session focused on “Water Innovation and Youth Solutions.”

  • Invite experts from environmental NGOs or universities to speak at future workshops.

  • Create a digital booklet of youth artworks and reflections to share online.

The How Climate Change is Affecting Water Access in Europe workshop showed that education, creativity, and dialogue can transform complex environmental issues into personal action.

Participants left with new knowledge, new friends, and a sense of shared responsibility for the future of water in Europe.

UCA plans to continue developing similar workshops throughout 2025–2026, connecting local youth to global challenges through creative and participatory learning.
